Dear Parents, February, 2018
February has arrived and it has been cold! Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring your child is ready for the day with warm clothing, extra mittens and snow pants and boots. Children are getting really good at looking after their own belongings; however it is always important to practice and reinforce this concept at home. Making sure your child is responsible for packing message folders and library books is a good place to start. Children enjoyed participating on the school wide family literacy day in January and got to bring home some great books!
Our school day begins at 8:50 am, having your children at school on time is extremely important. Children should be entering the school with their classmates in the morning line up; it is very disruptive to everyone when children are coming in after the bell. I know how busy mornings can be with young children and hectic work schedules, but we would really appreciate if everyone made this a priority for the rest of the school year!
Eric Carle is our author/illustrator for February. Children will love his stories and brightly coloured illustrations. During reader’s workshop children have been learning to read with a partner, looking for patterns in books, solving tricky words with a variety of strategies and doing picture walks to see what the story is about. Keep up the reading at home, it makes a huge difference! And, as always, make sure to fit in time for story books of your child’s choice…remember you are your child’s first teacher and they are watching and modelling what you do!
For writing the children have been working on adding more detail to their drawings and using their known letter sounds to stretch out words. We have also been using mini offices during writing which allow children to copy high frequency words (ex. the, to, my etc.) and high interest words (ex. mom, dad, January etc.). It also provides a quiet workspace for children to work independently. Children have started non fiction reading and writing and have mastered many of the features of non-fiction texts. We are working on creating our own non-fiction writing in the form of “All About” books. We have written about seahorses, penguins and spiders.
Penny the penguin has been making her rounds to each of your homes, thank you for your participation in this fun little endeavour…the kids cannot wait for their turn to take care of Penny!
Valentine’s Day
Our Valentine’s Day celebration is set for Wednesday, February 14th. Thank you for sending in your child’s brown paper bag filled with some special surprises! We will be having a Valentine’s Day celebration in our class where children can deliver valentines to their classmates if they wish. I ask that you or your child simply write FROM ROBIN or LOVE ROBIN on each card rather than addressing each one. It simplifies deliveries for the children, thank you in advance! If you have any questions let me know. We currently have 21 students in our class.
Scholastic Book Order
Due Friday, February 9th, thank you for sending in cheques payable to Scholastic Ltd or paying online at www.scholastic.ca
