Home reading will begin in late October. This is the letter that will accompany your child's bag of books.
Learning to read is a partnership between home and school. Reading with you child daily is an important support to the English Language Arts program we teach at school. These books will allow for you and your child to read for 10-20 minutes each evening. Your involvement in the program will help build a positive attitude toward reading. Your child will learn to enjoy books in a personal, loving atmosphere.
This is your child’s bag of books for a one week period. In this bag you will find books he/she may be able to read independently. The books are to be read and re-read over the course of the week with an adult, older sibling, family member, caregiver etc. The bag of books will be sent home on Wednesday of every week. Please ensure that all books are cared for properly and returned to school on time. When children return their books, I give them a sticker on their duotang.
Throughout the week children can record their reading by colouring in one shape (candy corn this month) for every 10-20 minutes of reading time. This reading log can stay inside the reading folder.
This year your child is going to learn a variety of strategies to help him/her read. Some of these are:
Good readers use many of these strategies when reading, rather than relying on only one or two. Please refer to these as your child reads with you.
Happy Reading!!!!!

This year your child is going to learn a variety of strategies to help him/her read. Some of these are:
- Look through the book first to see what it’s about.
- Look at the pictures to find out what the word might say (never cover up pictures…they provide valuable information!)
- Point to each word as you read. When you get better at reading, you’ll “point with your eyes”.
- Think about what makes sense when you read.
- Think about what sounds right when you read,
- Think about what looks right when you read. Look at the first or more letters to see if the printed word matches what you want to say.
- “Chunk” big words (look of smaller words in a big word)
- “Cross-Check” for more information if you aren’t sure about a word (check the letters if the picture doesn’t give enough information and vice versa)
Good readers use many of these strategies when reading, rather than relying on only one or two. Please refer to these as your child reads with you.
